8 Must-Do Activities in Cape Town, South Africa
If you could visit only one city that packs mountains, beaches, vibrant culture, and world-class wine into a single trip, make it Cape Town. Cape Town is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever visited. With its breathtaking mountain views, sprawling vineyards, vibrant neighborhoods, and deep historical roots, this city has truly captured my heart. From its painful past, a resilient and warm community has emerged, along with a cultural richness that is nothing short of inspiring. If Cape Town isn’t on your bucket list yet, it should be.
There’s so much to do here, depending on your vibe; adventure, culture, food, or just good old relaxation. Here are eight must-do activities you should include on your visit to Cape Town.
1. Table Mountain Hike and Cable Car
Table Mountain is a standout attraction, boasting a flat-top summit and sweeping views of the city. When clouds roll over, they form a “tablecloth,” giving this mountain its quirky charm. You can hike up (which I highly recommend if you’re up for a challenge) or take the cable car both ways. I hiked via the Platteklip Gorge Trail, which usually takes 2.5 hours but took us longer due to a slower group member. The views were worth every step!
Pro Tip: Hike early in your trip so you don’t talk yourself out of it. If you see trail runners, step aside safely to let them pass.

2. Bo-Kaap Walking Tour & Malay Cooking Class
This colorful, historic neighborhood dates back to the 1760s and is filled with stories of resilience. A popular myth claims that the houses in this neighborhood have different colors so that a drunk person could find their home. This is not true. Locals say the colors represent the freedom and professions of formerly enslaved residents.
We took a cooking class with a local host who shared her experiences while teaching us to make delicious Cape Malay dishes, such as roti and curry. The experience was personal, tasty, and heartwarming.
Pro Tip: For crowd-free photos, consider going early in the morning. Always be respectful—these are people’s homes.

3. Desert Dune Quad Biking & Sandboarding
Hands down, one of the most exhilarating activities! Zoom through the dunes on a quad bike and follow it up with a sandboarding session. They provide helmets and guides that tailor the pace to your comfort level.
If you’ve snowboarded before, you’ll love sandboarding. If not, be ready to wipe out—and laugh a lot. I’m still finding sand in my shoes months later. Pro Tip: Arrange your return ride in advance. Cell service is spotty out there.

5. Tandem Paragliding
This activity might top the list! The ride is short, but the views are breathtaking. My instructor had been doing this for 15 years and called it the best job in the world. I believe him. You’ll soar over the city with views that words can’t describe. Just do it!

6. Robben Island Tour
This sobering yet essential experience gives you insight into South Africa’s history. You’ll tour the prison where Nelson Mandela was held, guided by a former inmate who shares first-hand experiences. It’s emotional and powerful, a poignant reminder of the strength and hope that the human spirit embodies.

7. Wine Tasting in Stellenbosch
We visited three wineries and sampled award-winning wines paired with chocolate and biltong. I booked a private driver, but you can also take the Wine Tram, which stops at various estates.
Pro Tip: Don’t go on an empty stomach, you’ll thank me later.

8. Sunset Cruise
Cape Town sunsets are magical. What better way to enjoy them than with a catamaran cruise, champagne in hand, and good music in the background? A picture-perfect way to end your trip.
Pro Tip: Bring a light jacket, as it can get chilly on the water in the evening.
